Dear Concerned Dad,

Here are some ideas to aid in the study of the capitals based on age and developmental stages. If your daughter is between the ages of 6 and 12, studying should include things that are concrete, and real. Using a physical map, maybe with states that can be removed and replaced would be a great way for her to hold the state and say the name of the capital. Another way to study might be to use Google Earth to show where these capitals actually are on the state, as well as photo links to the capital. Doing this in small sections, a few per day, will aid in retention. If your daughter is over 12 yrs old, then some more abstract methods might benefit her. Using a mnemonic device to memorize the capitals, or listening/watching the Animaniacs' song on YouTube of the States and Capitals would be a good way to remember them. Here is a link to a site that has leveled online practice for the states and capitals, http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm . This would also be appropriate for those over 12 yrs of age. Your participation in this endeavor is important for her motivation and her learning.

Sincerely,
Dr. Piaget
